  • Joining

How do I join the NTHU International Volunteer Corps?

Recruitment opens in the first semester of each academic year (around September to October) and is announced on our social media. Interested students fill in an application form and join after an interview. Follow our Facebook and Instagram for the latest news.

  • Joining

What are the requirements for joining?

You don’t necessarily need specific professional skills to join as an international volunteer. What matters most is a strong commitment to service, teamwork, and the ability to learn and adapt in a cross-cultural environment. Attitude & Passion: Bring an open, respectful, and eager-to-learn mindset. You should be a team player who is passionate about community service and cultural exchange. Time & Commitment: Be fully committed to the entire journey—including preparation, training, overseas service, and wrap-up activities. This includes attending all planned meetings, courses, and prep work. Adaptability & Independence: Have basic skills for both independent and communal living. You should be ready to adapt to local living conditions and stay flexible when facing challenges or sudden changes. Service-Learning Mindset: Be willing to learn through service, respect local cultures and needs, and work together with your team to complete the mission. Note: Service themes and requirements vary by team. Depending on the mission, some teams may offer training in areas like IT, Education, Language, or Special Education.

  • Costs

Do volunteers need to cover their own costs?

Our funding comes from school budget subsidies, government grants, corporate sponsorships, and member out-of-pocket contributions. Team members may still need to cover a portion of the expenses related to travel and mission requirements. The actual out-of-pocket amount varies each year depending on the service location, team size, transportation, accommodation, and final fundraising outcomes. Detailed cost estimates will be explained to applicants during the interview.

  • Activities

How long is the overseas service, and when does it take place?

Our international volunteer teams primarily serve overseas during winter and summer vacations. The exact travel dates and service duration (approximately 25–30 days) are adjusted based on each team's project and the needs of our local partner organizations. Your mission does not start on the day you board the plane, nor does it end as soon as you touch down back home. Before departure, teams go through a comprehensive preparation period. Some teams may also conduct advance visits or preliminary exchanges to build relationships with local schools and host institutions. After returning, team members must complete a series of project wrap-up tasks. A team's mission is only officially complete when the next generation of volunteers is recruited. To learn about the latest recruitment eligible applicants, departure schedules, and project details, please stay tuned for our annual recruitment sessions and information meetings.

  • Activities

What do volunteers actually do during the service?

Information Technology (IT) education has long been a core focus of our international volunteer teams. We help improve learning resources for overseas partner schools through IT courses (such as Scratch and Python), computer lab setup and equipment maintenance, refurbished computer distribution, and teacher training. Our service is not limited to a single topic. Each team designs its project based on local needs, partner facilities, and volunteer expertise. Current project areas include: 💻 IT Education & Digital Learning 🗣️ Mandarin Language & STEM/Science Education ♿ Special Education & Disaster Preparedness

  • Activities

Do volunteer teams decide their own service destinations and activities?

The destinations and project plans for our international volunteer teams are not decided unilaterally by the teams themselves. Instead, they are based on a combination of local needs, partner conditions, team capabilities, and overseas safety assessments. During the initial planning stage, team leaders and student volunteers communicate with local partner schools, NGOs, or service agencies to understand their educational and community needs. The team then designs its service content based on available team members, expertise, and resources. Additionally, prior to departure, the school conducts safety and risk assessments for the destination area. This covers local political stability, public safety, natural disasters, public health, transportation, and other factors that could impact the team's safety, drawing continuously on travel advisories from relevant government agencies. A trip is only confirmed once overall risks are assessed to be within acceptable levels, and all safety measures and contingency plans are finalized. Therefore, even if a local need exists, the school may adjust, postpone, or cancel a trip if safety assessments deem the local situation unsuitable. By balancing Local Needs × Team Capabilities × School Safety Oversight, we ensure a balance between service goals and volunteer safety, allowing every overseas project to be carried out under appropriate and secure conditions.

  • Activities

Besides teaching, do NTHU international volunteer teams provide supplies or equipment?

Yes, we do! Based on the actual needs of our local partner schools and institutions, our teams collect, organize, and ship suitable educational equipment and learning resources—such as refurbished computers, laptops, cameras, headphones, video equipment, teaching materials, and sports gear. Providing equipment and supplies is not just about "giving things away." It is about matching our resources with local needs so that hardware and service programs work hand in hand.

  • Activities

Do international volunteer teams serve in the same countries every year?

Not necessarily. Since the establishment of our international volunteer program, we have continuously built partnerships with schools and organizations across various countries and regions. We adjust our service locations and project contents based on local needs, partnership terms, and team resources. The exact destinations and number of teams change according to annual planning. We also gradually develop new partnerships through preliminary exploratory trips, needs assessments, and follow-up visits.
